Attention all Media/Journalist Students

Exciting Opportunity for Student Journalists

Boxing Ireland Promotions are running a professional boxing show at the National Stadium on the 27th of May 2017 and would like to offer several students the opportunity to join our public relations team for this event.

The successful applicants will be directly involved in event PR, getting direct access to fighters, trainers, and promoters in the run up to this event. Also on fight night, students will attend the event as press, where they will be present ringside.

This high-profile sporting event will include several up and coming professional fighters and will feature on the back pages of many of our national newspapers in the run up to fight night.

The Boxing Ireland promotions team is headed by Len Gunning and includes Stephen Sharpe who manages the Irish aspect of the promotion, both have an extensive background in boxing journalism and will provide support and direction to students.

Students involved will be required to produce at least one media piece related to the promotion. This can take the form of photography, short video, feature article or news piece. Support will be provided in terms of developing ideas and access to required gym, fighter etc.  Finished pieces will be published across several boxing news platforms, allowing students to further build their profile.

Other opportunities will include the chance to attend planned media events, get to know some of Irelands top boxing journalists and develop an understanding PR within a sporting event context.

Interested students can apply by emailing stesharpe15@gmail.com or contact Stephen Sharpe at https://www.facebook.com/stesharpepr/

Exploring the Relationship between Irelands Protest Groups and the Media

The following essay will explore how social protest groups are portrayed and represented within Irish mainstream media. I will examine past research on media coverage of social protests to demonstrate what is known as the protest paradigm, “a set of news coverage patterns that typifies mainstream media coverage” which “generally disparages protesters and hinders their role as vital actors on the political stage. (McLeod, 2017, P1)

I will present research that demonstrates that “although Irish daily papers are rarely overtly party political, centre right politics dominate” (Meade, 2008, P331).

Eric Donovan – Winning Mentality

“WHEN FIRST ENCOUNTERED IT’S NOT THE PUGILISTIC PROWESS THAT IMPRESSES, INSTEAD IT’S THE ATTITUDE OF THE KILDARE MAN THAT HITS HARDEST”

An ancient Chinese philosopher (Lao Tzu) once stated that the winning of all battles is directly related to the depth of one’s self-awareness. If such philosophy of a winning mentality mirrors reality, then the future looks bright for former Irish amateur star Eric Donovan.

This Saturday night (February, 25th, 2017) at the National Stadium, the Kildare favourite aims to add additional wind to the sails of his rising reputation. Stepping back into the ring at a venue that served him well as an amateur, Donovan will be hunting win number three of his professional boxing career.

Leaving boxing aside for a moment, when crossing the path of Eric Donovan, outside the ring of course, it’s not the pugilistic prowess that most impresses, instead it’s the attitude of the Kildare man that packs the biggest punch.

Kenny Egan – Journey from Despair

I was very calculated in my drinking patterns and had my dates all worked out around the boxing calendar so I could have the best of both worlds, box and drink in equal measure, giving both 100%.

The journey to self-truth takes many forms; mine was a roller-coaster of sporting bliss, personal despair and finally a passage of self-discovery.

Hello my name is Kenneth Egan and I am a recovering alcoholic. Admitting and accepting these words proved to be a life changing catalyst towards recovery and an even bigger stride towards a more peaceful and productive existence.

From Rebel Stock – Dublin women’s fight for drug addicted generation

No longer able to sit idly by while heroin addiction devastated the Crumlin suburb of Dublin, she could watch no more, it was time to act.

For one Dublin women, her determination to take a stand for the perished and dying heroin addicts within her community would mean frequently coursing a line that traversed the edge of a violent, tragic and at times unpredictable existence.

Mother of two Susan Collins, was by the late 1990’s illegally dispensing Physeptone, (later know as heroin substitute, Methadone) to over one hundred drug addicts from the front door of her Crumlin home. No longer able to sit idly by while heroin addiction devastated the Crumlin suburb of Dublin, she could watch no more, it was time to act. She was willing to fight, just like her Grandfather did during the 1916 rising, “it’s in my blood”. While several community groups called on the Irish Government to provide an adequate response, the mother of two decided, enough was enough.
